Why were children from military families called military brats?
I’m guessing it is more of the “brat pack” answer already given. I was a military brat while my dad served in 2 branches of the military. It was not uncommon to move even 3-4 times in a YEAR. So I’d always end up in a new school joining mid-term. The teacher would introduce me to the whole class & state that my father was in the military & I had just moved in. By lunch time, the other military brats would make their way to me to introduce themselves. So in that sense we ran in “packs” b/c we had already learned the futility of making friendships that last. It was easier to stick to making friends that I’d only know for a few months. These other “brats” were in the same custom of “speedy” friendships. We interacted quicker with each other whereas civilian children would think, “that’s too much, too fast.” It was like minded children sticking together. Plus there was military talk that only we’d understand ourselves. Like, “I can’t play b/c I’m on K.P tonight.” OR “I have to patrol the y
