Why were air raid sirens still in use in the early 1950s in southern England?
Every village, town and city in the United Kingdom used to have a network of sirens to warn of incoming air-raids during World War II, and latterly as sirens for nuclear attack during the cold war. With the end of the cold war , the siren network was decommissioned in 1993 and very few remain. Where they do remain, they are mostly sounded on receipt of a Severe Flood Warning for an area from the Environment Agency. Sirens are also used for public warning near gas or Nuclear power plants, Nuclear submarine bases, Oil refineries and Chemical plants.
