Why we lost interest in Zong Zi?
The Dragon Boat Festival is coming next week. Now Zong Zi, the traditional food for Dragon Boat Festival, are everywhere in Shanghai. Zong Zi, translated as Glutinous Rice Dumpling is basically glutinous rice wrapped in leaves (I wonder why Chinese food is always translated to dumpling). Most of them are cone shaped and some may be stuffed with meat, red bean paste etc. So it may taste salty or sweet. Today’s morning news said that now less and less people make their own Zong Zi for the festival, especially young generation. The reason the news concluded is because the new generation don’t know how to make it. I feel this is the result rather than the reason. The real reason I think is probably that we are not interested in Zong Zi any more. I remember when I was a kid, my mother always made Zong Zi for the festival and usually a lot because all of us love it and we could only eat it around Dragon Boat Festival. But now, Zong Zi as a food doesn’t seem so attractive to us any more. • It
