Why wasn the power station built further away from town?
Originally, when the power station was being planned it was considered ‘out of town’ – five kilometres from the closest community housing. The site was chosen because the power station was designed to use sea water for cooling purposes rather than scarce fresh water and so had to be close to Auckland Creek and the Calliope River. However, over time Gladstone has grown and some housing and medium sized businesses have encroached on the boundaries of the power station.
