Why wasn Hannibal Lecter caught earlier?
Good question. I’ve read all the books as well, but that detail escaped me. I suppose though, that, long before Lecter does anything to his victims in a psysical way, he has already got inside their heads and screwed them up. Take Multiple Miggs, for instance, in Silence of the Lambs, Lecter is not even in the same cell as Miggs, but he manages to crawl right inside his head and convince Miggs to swallow his own tongue. The mind is a funny thing and in doing what he did to him, Lecter violated Verger in such a way that he would, perhaps, feel very uncomfortable in sharing with the police. How many real-life rape victims blame themselves or else feel so dirty and violated that they just bottle everything up? It really does happen and would a man like Verger admit to anyone that he allowed anyone to exercise such total control over him?
