Why wasnt Acne-Statin advertised from 1981-91?
In 1979 Dr. Karr agreed to sign an FTC consent order because in it, the FTC said that she would be able to advertise that Acne-Statin was efficacious (that it worked), only if she had two double-blind studies that were to be performed by two independent dermatologist qualified in the field of acne. These terms has been advised by the five dermatologist consultants who had complained in the first place. Dr. Karr agreed knowing that Acne-Statin was efficacious, not only because of her own studies, but also by the thousands of letters that customers had sent her. (People would not send money to reorder a product again and again if it did not work for them.) Dr. Karrs clinical studies on her own patients were declared by the dermatologists as not objective and the hundreds of customer letters that Dr. Karr gave to the FTC, who in turn gave them to the dermatologist consultants were declared by the dermatologists as anecdotal and therefore didnt count.
