Well, it was the first major large-scale war in a while, and during that time (from the late 1800’s until the outbreak in 1914) it was sort of obvious to all the European countries that a big war would eventually and inevitably come, and so to prepare for it, they developed and built up all their weapons. The navies especially swelled up in size as the british relentlessly built dreadnought battleships and the germans built submarines. It’s interesting to think that some technology had already existed, such as airplanes, but WW1 was the first time they were used for warful purposes, while other technologies were invented as a direct result of the war, like tanks, which were conceived as a way of overcoming the deadlocked trench positions of the western front.
