Why was there a delay in implementing the closures after the 2005 approval of the SRMP?
After the SRMP was approved in 2005, agencies were required to determine the best way to implement the SRMP. This included discussions with stakeholders about combining education, cooperation, and legal closures to meet stakeholder needs. Wildlife Act closures for those areas critical to Mountain caribou were in place by fall 2005. Based on the expertise of the Conservation Officers and other government staff who have been working with VARDA and based on their experience in the area, FRPA Section 58 was identified as the most effective tool to legally manage the 2007 recreation closures.
