Why was their controversy surrounding the newsweek Palin cover?
Well, well, sounds like Sarah Palin isn’t quite the show-stopping stunner some of you think she is. Apparently without makeup and the miracle of photoshop, the Alaska governor looks just like (GASP!) every other middle-aged woman from Small-Town America. And that’s a fact that has conservative Republicans very unhappy. The right-wingers are boo-hooing over Newsweek editors’ decision to run a cover photo of the Republican Vice-Presidential hopeful that appear to have not been retouched. “This cover is a clear slap in the face at Sarah Palin,” Andrea Tantaros, a Republican political and media commentator said of the unedited cover during Fox News’ America’s Newsroom. “Why? Because it’s unretouched. It highlights every imperfection that every human being has. We’re talking unwanted facial hair, pores, wrinkles.” “This is a gross slap in the face to Sarah Palin after Newsweek has done so many favorable covers of Barack Obama that make him look presidential, that are clearly retouched. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant,” she wrote on her fan page, adding, “The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now.” She also told ABC’s Barbara Walters that she found the cover “a wee bit degrading.” Others, like CBN’s David Brody, said our cover was a new low: “biased and sexist at the same time.” Newsweek’s Editor Jon Meacham has responded to critics. “We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said. “We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.” Sources:
