Why was the Spanish-American War a “splendid little war” for the United States?

The Spanish-American War was a very short war, 2 months I think. Spain was a weakening empire and the US was interested in Cuba for several reasons. 1. Cuba was a very strategic place to have a defense base/national security reasons. 2. Yellow journalism of Spanish cruelty reached American ears and we felt bad for the Cubans. This also happened during a period of Imperialism, where Americans felt that they still needed to expand since we’d kicked all of the Native Americans off their land. So pretty much, we got a bunch of land from Spain (Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico) and it showed that the US was a world power now.
