Why was the Schlieffen plan developed?
The plan was devolped in response to France and Russia signing an agreement to help each other in the event of either country getting into a war. Germany knew that both countries had the Germans in mind when they signed this as both Rissia and France had at that time borders with germany. The germans knew that if both the french and the russians attacked them at the same time they would not have the manpower to defeat them both at the same time. They decided that in the event of a war the French would be the biggest danger in the short term, this was because the French had a large army and a good rail network that would allow then to organise and mass their army on the border within a couple of weeks. the russians on the other hand while having a massive army had poor railways and oganisation, they would need to bring their troops from all over Russia and then march most of them many hundreds of miles along dirt roads before they got anywhere near german soil, the germans felt that it
