Relay for Life postponed until June 5 by Frances Hayes Excessive rain and flooding has caused a postponement of the 14th annual Wilkes Relay for Life scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday on the Wilkes Community College campus. The all night event has been rescheduled to next Friday, June 5 and will follow the same schedule originally planned for this weekend, said Arnold Lakey, spokesperson for the Wilkes Relay for Life. The announcement was made this morning. The area where the Relay for Life is held have been mostly under water and the forecast for more rain on Friday caused the postponement. “The fields will be so wet and we expect it would keep many people away. Also we have already sold over 5,000 luminaries, which would be placed on the walking track Thursday. It would be a shame not to be able to light them because of the rain,” said Lakey.
