At first sight the good old serial RS-232 interface appears to be more complex than a USB connector, but in fact the latter is vastly more complicated in terms of development effort and software connections (i.e. drivers), and we decided against such a development in order to keep costs within limits. In any case, USB – serial adaptors are available cheaply from many suppliers, and can be used with all manner of equipment.
