Why was the name of home economics for secondary programs in California changed to Home Economics Careers and Technology?
In the early part of the 20th century, home economics education focused on preparing students for home and family living. However, since 1971, there has been an expanded focus in preparing students for careers related to home economics in addition to preparing students for personal and family life management. In addition, parents and the business/industry community are demanding that students exit high school with more specific knowledge and skills for advanced education, as well as for careers. To reflect the change in program emphasis, meet the demands of society, and to retain a program identity, focus groups were convened to develop a name for California secondary home economics education programs that would accurately describe the focus. After much consideration, it was recommended that the name be changed to Home Economics Careers and Technology.
