Why was the Haiti Earthquake so destructive?

One thing I heard about that made it so destructive was that the earthquake epicenter was very shallow, and not deep underground. Apparently, when the earthquake originates close to the surface of the earth, it makes the ground shake much harder than does a deeper earthquake.
