Why was the Haiku project started?
Simple: to keep the BeOS alive. The project was started just a few days after the announcement that Palm was purchasing the BeOS (along with all other intellectual property) from Be Inc. The motivating force to create Haiku was to keep the BeOS from disappearing. By implementing our own version of the BeOS, we can completely remove any possibility that corporate concerns will decide the fate of our OS. We will put the power and control into the hands of the community instead.
