Why was the Gettysburg Address Given?
The Gettysburg Address was given to honor the dead at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery (now Gettysburg National Cemetery) at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863. President Lincoln was the second speaker to address the crowd; the first speaker had talked for almost two hours. President Lincoln’s speech lasted less than three minutes.
