Why was the double tapered “BICON” introduced?
It was introduced to allow reduced bone resection anteriorly and offer improved contact between the implant and the cup base. The special advantage of the biconical design is its geometric form, which more closely approximates the spherical shape of the acetabulum compared with a single taper. This allows more bone to be preserved whilst at the same time retaining the important advantages of the taper: tilt stability, pre-stressing, activation of osseointegration and improved protection against cup migration.
