Look at the Declaration of Independence as the Media of the day…one third of the colonists were not committed to revolution. He wanted, and the cause needed, their support. He outlines points that were aimed at the common man…mainly individual political and economic freedoms..individual liberties…when you read the “complaint” section of the document he paints the King as taken away the basic “rights of Englishmen”….also, perphaps it was a war move. There is no way that the rag-tag army of Washington could hold there own against the British army…and the U.S. navy was a joke….he realized that the colonies would need European assistance…who better than France…still stinging from the French and Indian War,,but the French were beginning to struggle with their own questions about Monarchies…how would it look if the French government supported an overthrow of another monarch…

Students will understand how using this type of graphic organizer will aid them in reading comprehension. The title tells you why it was written..it is a declaration of independence. The colonials felt like they needed to do this to get badly needed help from France and possibly Spain. Both of those nations had monarchs and it would not have looked good to their subjects if they help overthrow a king….however, it the colonies were independent then they could come in of the side of an underdog…help defeat an arch enemy and possible gain favorable trade status to the west…
