Why was the Berlin Wall taken down?
There are many reasons for the fall of the Berlin Wall. However the main reasons were the change in leadership in East Germany about one month before the fall of the wall, and massive demonstrations drawing up to one million people to East Berlin. Eventually, the government caved under the massive pressure from the people.
The Berlin Wall was built to keep people from Eastern Berlin escaping to the west. It divided families as well as Germany. It was not something the German people ever wanted. When the Soviet Union fell, East Germany made the decision to get rid of the wall. They tore it down and allowed people to travel more or less freely over the border with the West. Within a couple of years, they reunified cash-strapped East Germany with the more prosperous West Germany and they became one nation again.
