Why was the Adjunct Teacher Initiative developed?

There is a shortage of qualified personnel to teach mathematics and science in grades 7 through 12 in many school districts in Arizona. In addition, Arizona has raised high school math and science graduation requirements. Currently the number of math teachers retiring is exceeding the number coming into the field; an additional 70 math teachers is needed per year just to keep up. An additional 400 math teachers is needed to meet the new graduation requirements in math. The Adjunct Teacher Initiative would help alleviate this critical situation by bringing professionals with subject-matter knowledge and experience into these classrooms.
