Why was Sudetenland crucial to Czech security?
there was nothing called sudetenland. it was made-up German name for the border regions of Czech state with majority of German-nationality inhabitants. As such they were claimed by Hitler to be handed over to the Germany at the munich treaty. Unfortunately this literally bypassed all the border defense systems of Czechoslowakia, because although well prepared and modern equipped, the defenses were placed mostly in the hilly border regions, along the most probable incursion routes from Germany, Austria and Poland. Once Munich traty was signed, the German border factually advanced one hundred kilometers into the Czech territory, rendering the first line of defenses useless. then only fragments of second line defences, in the region of Beroun and Rakovnik were within the remainning Czech territory.
