Why was nicholas ii unpopular in 1905?
There were various reasons why Nicholas II was unpopular in 1905. Some of these, like the backwardness of Russia’s economy & the lack of representative government, were perennial problems. But it was the disastrous failure of Russian arms, on both land & sea, in the war with Japan which was the immediate cause of Nicholas’ unpopularity. It was the first occasion on which one of the great European powers had been defeated by non-European armies & a tremendous feeling of shame & humiliation swept over Russia.
