Why was NATO against Serbia before the war in 1999?
There were 4 main reasons. Firstly, Germany, an important NATO member, and Croatia,Serbia’s traditional enemy, were traditional allies.Croatia wished to destroy Serbian power, but was unable to initiate a war themselves due to strong NATO peacekeeping forces in the former Yugoslavia.Their German allies therefore convinced NATO to attack Serbia to do the job for them. Secondly,the Serbian economy was strong and prosperous before the war, and was based on a socialist system outside of the capitalist system used by the EU.The Serbian economic model was therefore a viable alternative for ex Soviet Bloc countries to adopt, perhaps even in some kind of association with Serbia.This was unacceptable to the EU, which wished to expand into Eastern and central Europe.It was therefore necessary to destroy or at least cripple the Serbian economy.Most EU countries were also members of NATO.
