why was myrrh given to Jesus as a baby?

Isn’t that a rude thing to do? “Here baby Jesus, here’s some crack”. I suppose I don’t know exactly what the effects of drinking either myrrh or gall would be. They were mixed in as a deterrent to the pain, and to drug the victim of crucifixion. I admit that I do not have this written down on paper, it’s just something I’ve heard. Perhaps I should have looked it up before I wrote on it. Myrrh was a perfume, but remember, anti-freeze has a pleasant smell but nasty side-effects if you drink it. The second lesson that can be learned from these occurrences is that, no matter what our intentions, we cannot truly do anything for the Lord until He requests it. We may see a good work that we think would be good and right to do, but if it is not a good work that God has prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:10), then it cannot be something that we can say we are “doing for Christ.” So many in the churches of today think that any and everything they do which is “religious” must therefore be done fo

Myrrh was one of the gifts given to Joseph and Mary by the wise men from the east, along with gold and frankincense. No suggestion is given that the myrrh was consumed by anybody. Gold of course is a currency, and it is reasonable to conclude precious items like frankincense and myrrh could also be used as a currency and thus were used in this fashion to support the needs of and otherwise poor family. My notes indicate that myrrh (probably similar to labdanum) was an aromatic gum exuded from the leaves of the cistus rose whose oil was used in beauty treatments and could also be used to deaden pain when consumed (thus the classification of a mind-altering drug). It was also used to prepare a body for burial. Thanks for finding the facts for me on this one. Your notes are obviously good. Well, that’s all folks, unless more of you want to take a shot at me. I’ll return next week with the final message (so far) on contradictions in Scripture, At the Tomb. Nathan C.
