Why was it important to Xianhui to have his stories available in English?
A. While writing the book, author Yang Xianhui made it a personal mission to present history from the perspectives of victims, to reveal the truth and to bring closure to those who had suffered in those horrifying years. He hopes that such tragedy will not be repeated in China. By making Yang’s stories available in English, I hope to share these tragedies with Western audiences and contribute to people’s knowledge around the world about the horrors perpetrated by the Communist regimes in China. In addition, as China is emerging as a major world economic power, what is happening in China is having a profound impact on people in the West. It is important for Western audiences to learn about China and understand its past, especially its recent history under Mao whose shadows are still hovering over China.
