Why was isaac newton misunderstood?

Who said that Newton was misunderstood? He is considered to be one of the greatest minds in history right up there with Einstein and Darwin. Newton’s laws of mechanics are still used today for virtually all engineering. Where Newton got it wrong was his idea that light and gravity had infinite speed. Einstein corrected that idea. All of Newton’s mechanics can be derived from special and general relativity, but at speeds much less than the speed of light, masses less than that of a star, and complicated systems, Newton’s mechanics work perfectly well. Note that some technology needs corrections for general relativity (GPS systems) and uses quantum mechanics (semiconductor electronics).

Newton was an ardent alchemist. He spent a lot of his time trying to turn lead into gold or silver. In the minds of most people in Newton’s day, alchemy, which was really just early chemistry, equaled practicing witchcraft.
