Why was firefly cancelled?
low ratings it was on Friday nights and was getting no viewers – it was one of the lowest rated shows that year. Most fans of the show did not become aware of it until after it had been cancelled and it was released on DVD. DVD sales were high enough that FOX considered bringing the franchise back – so they made the movie Serenity to try and gauge its popularity. Serenity was a box office bomb. So really the reason for Firefly’s cancellation all comes down to financials. The show was just not popular enough to warrant the expense of continuing on with the franchise. Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly and director of Serenity, has a new show that will be on FOX this Fall called Dollhouse. Early word on the show is pretty positive – check it out. Maybe it’ll help out your lament over the cancellation of Firefly.
