Why was Doc invoking evil entities like Dormammu and Satannish in his early stories?
Here is my list of theories and explanations: • Doc has since been interpreted away from his original character concept as the creepy Master of Black Magic. • When Mordo attacks The Ancient One in Doc’s first origin story, the Ancient One cries out, “The Vapors were spawned by black magic, and only by black magic can they be dispelled!” The Ancient One then proceeds to invoke Dormammu in his counter-spell. One needs to fight fire with fire sometimes. [ST #115] • In Doc’s early stories, there was no real distinction made between good and evil magic. It was all “black magic.” • Doc was a young and foolish novice then. [Dormammu says this- I’ll find the exact comic again someday.] • Doc only stopped invoking them after learning that they were evil.
