Why was Capa so significant?
Capa, Taro, and Chim were among the first photographers to go into battle with their small, handheld cameras and photograph the bombing and fighting as it unfolded. They were partisan photojournalists, committed to the Spanish Republican cause and the importance of educating people about the growing threat of fascism through the picture press. They photographed in Spain throughout the warTaro was killed in action there. Their partisan engagement helped them get closer to their subjects and consequently make powerful images.
