Why was Blue Moon financially impaired early in the show?
Because Maddie maintained the detective agency (as well as other investments) as tax write offs. David and the staff did little work at their jobs, and much playing. In the pilot episode, Maddie’s lawyer informed her that the agency lost over 400 grand that year. On Maddie’s first day in the office, Agnes informed her of their strict schedules, which included a weekly manicurist, a sandwich delivery, etc. In later episodes Agnes commented on how Maddie’s arrival improved Blue Moon.
