Why was Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria assassinated?
The assassination was part of the reaction of slav nacionalists to the Austro-Hungrian anexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908. Their ultimate objective was to obtain a secession of slav provinces from the empire, and unification of southern slavs in a single country (later known as Yugoslavia). Since the anexation, the resistence to the Austro-Hungarian occupation organized meny other attacks to Austrian authorities. Franz Ferdinand and his wife were only the most famous victims.
