Absolutely. The entangling alliances were the principal cause of the outbreak of war. England, France, and Russia were bound together by the Triple Entente, while Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy were bound together by the Triple Alliance. On June 28, 1914, Gavrillo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne. Austria, naturally, was not pleased.
