Why was a connection to Highway 407 preferred over Highway 401 in the “west area”?
A new corridor connecting to Highway 407 is preferred over a new corridor connecting to Highway 401, in part, as it diverts a higher amount of traffic from the Highway 403 corridor. A connection to Highway 407 also has considerable economic benefits to a connection to Highway 401. Although a connection to Highway 407 will cross the Niagara Escarpment, it does avoid a higher density of significant natural features (such as the Beverley Swamp and other Provincially Significant Wetlands) that would be impacted by a connection to Highway 401. In addition, a connection to Highway 401 would require additional widening of Highways 403 and 401 through their respective escarpment areas that would not otherwise be necessary with a new corridor connection to Highway 407.
