Oxidation occurs when any oil is applied to the surface of soapstone. This causes a temporary deepening of the color of the stone. Because soapstone will react to any oil, customers usually choose to deepen the color uniformly with regular applications of mineral oil. Mineral oil does not support the growth of bacteria or other organisms and that is why it’s used.
