Why Use Limestone???
I remember each spring watching my father go to the hardware store and coming home with a trunk full of 40 pound bags of limestone. (There weren’t many garden centers or Malls back then). He would get the wheelbarrow, fill it up with bags, and haul them around to the backyard where the spreader was waiting. It would take him a couple of hours to apply it but he never regretted doing it. Our backyard had 5 full sized apple trees and two peach trees. In the fall some of the fruit would fall to the ground and rot where they fell. My father said this made the soil more acid and the grass wouldn’t be as good in the spring unless he spread limestone on to help the soil accept the fertilizer. Another reason was that we had a dog. If you spread limestone on your lawn where your pooch goes potty you’ll get rid of the wonderful urine smell that can come in your window on a hot summer night. I still have a dog and I still spread limestone a few times each summer when the smell starts to get to me
