It is always advisable to install a foam cushion between these surfaces to help prevent damaging pressure at these edges, caused by ground movement. It is also a good idea to install a good rubber expansion joint sealant (E-Z Joint Seal 23) to seal the top of the expansion joint so water will not penetrate the joint and get under the concrete causing more ground movement problems. the rubber expansion joint also looks better and prevents leaves, insects, etc. from getting into the joint.
