Why use flat cable on a festoon system?
Flat cable has several advantages over round cable. The main benefit is one can usually use a smaller carrier than with same round cable since the minimum bend radius of flat cable can be 1/3 or less of the round. Since the bend radius is tighter and all the conductors are in one plane, flat cable will easily compress into a ribbon shape when in storage. Round cable has a tendency to twist and sometimes catch on other loops. The flat design also makes it easy to stack multiple cables into a compact package.
