Why Use a Wool Diaper Cover?
The structure of wool fibers make it a natural choice for diaper covers. Wool fibers consist of overlapping scales called cuticles that repel water. When a thin coating of lanolin is added to wool, liquids will run off. In addition wool is breathable, an important factor in preventing diaper rash. The fibers of woven wool form a mesh consisting of many tiny pockets that allow air to pass through, cooling baby’s skin. Wool is superior to all other fabrics in it’s ability to handle body moisture in both warm and cool environments. The porosity of the cells in the outer layers of wool let it quickly absorb and evaporate moisture. In fact, the fibers can absorb up to 30% of their own weight in moisture without feeling damp or clammy. Due to it’s unique chemical structure and natural moisture content, wool is naturally fire resistant. And despite it’s moisture content, wool’s dry, porous nature repels mildew and dust mites. Wool also has natural antimicrobial properties.
