Why upgrade the M80 Ring Road?
The Ring Road carries up to 142,000 vehicles per day, including more than 22,000 trucks. The freeway is exceeding capacity in peak periods, causing traffic disruption and delays along the entire route. The upgrade will improve road capacity and improve traffic flow during peak times. There have been nine fatal accidents and 750 casualty crashes along the M80 Ring Road in the 5 years between 2003 and 2008. These crashes predominately occur at freeway merges where existing traffic lanes increase or decrease. The M80 Upgrade will improve safety for motorists and local communities by adding lanes between some interchanges to improve safety for traffic entering and exiting the freeway. How long will the M80 Upgrade take? The M80 Upgrade is expected to take more than 5 years to complete. The upgrade will be delivered in stages to minimise impact to motorists and the community.
