Why Totalitarianism occured in Germany?
There was political turmoil in Germany after their defeat in World War I, the German economy was in ruins, inflation was skyhigh and unemployment was rampant. The German army had been disarmed and the German government was busy making war reparations payments to Britain, USA, France, and Russia. The Treaty of Versailles in which the Germans agreed to surrender, was very harsh to the German people and their economy. There was a lot of anger, helplessness, and disappointment in the German people against their government who they felt had betrayed them and sold their well being to foreign powers. Hitler took advantage of this chaos and confusion by promising the German people a new future, a future where the German people ruled over Europe in a glorious new empire. To restore their economy and revive Germany from the ashes of defeat, and avenge Germany’s defeat by resurrecting the German army (the German Wehrmacht or War Machine) and defeating the enemies of the German people.
