While AFN maps indicate areas that others have found produce fish, they show only very basic information on physical features of the impoundment. Nonetheless, they are still an invaluable resource of to assist anglers find fish holding water. A cross check of a prime fishing location on the AFN map with the same position on a topographical map can reveal why it produces fish on a regular basis. Using pre-dam topographical maps can help determine where old buildings now lie flooded, where old creeks and river beds are found, old quarries, points, hills and cliffs, all of which can provide ideal habitat for native fish.
