Use of the power adapter is optional. However it can ensure users that the maximum full 500mA bus power is available to those high power bus-powered USB/Firewire DV devices. Cards that do not include a power adapter are not able to provide a full 500mA of power on each port. So you may have trouble using those high USB/Firewire bus-powered devices like external USB storage, scanners, CD-RW drives, hard drives, Zip drives, PDAs due to insufficient bus power provided from the ports connected.
