Why the name Chronos?
Chronos draws on sound pedagogical principles and practices. Chronos (khronos) is the Greek word for time. It was chosen as the name of this learning programme because long-term thinking is so important to sustainable development. As the report of the Brundtland Commission of 1987 says: Sustainable development is not a fixed state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development, and institutional change are made consistent with future as well as present needs. The definition of time from the Oxford English Dictionary is “the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole.” The phrase “indefinite continued progress” is really another way of describing sustainability.
