Management of the sports economy is an interesting and comparatively new area of study. The approach is multi-disciplinary, requiring an appreciation of management functions such as finance, marketing and human resource management, all applied to the sports industry and also other areas, such as the contrast between professional team sports and local voluntary sports clubs. Many of the skills developed are transferable, not only within the diverse sport and leisure industries, but also across the whole of the expanding service sector, which accounts for over two-thirds of employment in the UK and is growing internationally.
