Why the long delay after Understanding Comics?
• Writer’s block and sheer exhaustion. [2 months]. • Traveling, writing, being interviewed and playing the “ambassador” for comics to various book trade, comics, educational, international and digital events and can’t-say-no projects [2 Years]. • Becoming obsessed with computers; reading, buying, practicing, surfing, experimenting etc… [1.5 Years]. • Becoming a Father for the first — and Second! — time. [Time: Incalculable]. • Industry Collapse during which Lincoln, my then-current project was stalled and unsellable [1.5 Years]. What’s been your experience with censorship and/or the Comics Code? The only mainstream code-approved comics work I’ve done was writing 12 issues of DC Comics’ Superman Adventures; a comic based on the WB Cartoon and aimed at younger readers. I knew the guidelines instinctively and never violated them, so I never got any flack. All of my other work has been for small independent publishers where I’ve had creative control over my work.
