Why the effect of adrenaline on uterus varies during pregnancy?
The uterine smooth muscle contains predominantly alpha receptors EXCEPT in the pregnant female where the beta-2 receptors density increases especially after the 20th week of gestation. This makes selective beta-2 agonists useful in conditions associated with undesired uterine contraction e.g. threatened abortion, premature labor and contraction ring.
