Why the difference in price between handbuilt and diecast models?

0

Typically, handbuilt models are 3 to 10 times more expensive than factory built models. The difference in price is due to the much higher labor content of the handbuilt model – it is the labor and the limited production you are paying for. Handbuilt models are always produced in small quantities – often very limited production runs – and often of a rarer subject which may never appear as a diecast model (because the diecast models double as ‘toys for kids’ and must be of well known and popular cars to be able to sell in large quantities). Tooling costs for handbuilt cars are in the low thousands of dollars but the tools are capable of producing only a few hundred models. So the cost per model is relatively high. Tooling costs for diecast models run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, but can be amortized over hundreds of thousands of models produced on factory assembly lines. So the cost per model is low.
