About 10 years ago the city of San Diego designated 30-plus acres of the southeast corner of Brown Field as a transportation center. At that time an air cargo operation attempted to establish an air cargo facility at Brown Field. Part of the air cargo facility included a transportation center. Eventually, negotiations did not come to fruition and plans were dropped. Last January, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders announced plans to develop Brown Field and a “request for qualifications” was issued, which included any project on Brown Field. Six companies submitted their qualifications with one including the development of a transportation center. Since then, the city of San Diego has not been receptive to pursuing the development of the transportation center or anything else on Brown Field. As currently proposed, the transportation center would encompass a hotel with 200 to 300 rooms with a value of $30 million and direct access to aircraft, a travel plaza (truck stop, gas station, convenie
