Why Switch from Barracuda to Ironport?
Olin originally acquired the Barracuda Spam Firewall in 2005. While the system has performed well over the last four years, we have decided to use the University’s Ironport Email Security appliances to filter our incoming mail. All mail sent to University e-mail addresses (@wustl.edu) have always been filtered by the Ironports, so much of Olin’s e-mail was already being filtered there and then had to be filtered a second time by our Barracuda. Letting the Ironports filter mail sent to our local addresses (@olin.wustl.edu) ensures we have a consistent filtering policy and allows us to avoid the expense of maintaining our own spam filtering appliance. What changes will you see? More Accurate Filtering The Ironports generally appear to be more accurate than the Barracuda in filtering. Results will vary by individual and the kinds of email they receive. No Quarantine The University does not currently license the quarantine feature for the Ironports.
